With over 3,500 options, choosing Benjamin Moore paint colors can be stressful, but it doesn't have to be. Picking paint colors is a breeze when you remember a few key things.

  1. One of the oldest tricks in an interior designer's book is to use light colors to make rooms feel more spacious and darker shades to create a cozy, intimate feel.
  2. Undertones make a big difference. Every color can be warm or cool, depending on its undertones. Ensure the undertones of every color in a room are the same to avoid a harsh, disjointed look.
  3. You never truly understand the power of cohesive design until it isn't there. You don't want every room in your home to be identical, but you want some similarity so it's easy to transition from one space to another. Start by choosing a palette of four to six colors and work at least two colors from the palette into each room of your home.
  4. Never underestimate a neutral palette. Far from bland and uninspired, a neutral palette gives you unlimited space to express your creativity through colorful accents, wallpaper, and furniture.

Choosing a Finish

After you select the perfect color, it's time to decide on a finish or sheen. The sheen can make or break the result of your painting project, so it's important to choose wisely. Higher sheens are the most durable but also show imperfections more prominently. Sheens on the lower end cover nearly any flaws but are less durable. That's why sticking with a sheen in the middle of the spectrum is usually the best route.

  • FLAT

Flat paint doesn't reflect light and has zero shine, so it's the perfect finish for covering minor imperfections, like brush marks or patched areas on a wall. The caveat to flat finish paint is that it's more likely to experience burnishing than higher sheens, so it's best reserved for lower-traffic areas in your home.

  • MATTE

The next step up in the sheen spectrum, matte paint delivers a luxurious finish that looks fantastic in formal dining rooms and guest bedrooms. It can handle more frequent cleaning than flat paint, so it's best in areas with moderate traffic.

  • EGGSHELL

Eggshell is our most popular finish because it's the perfect mid-point between flat and glossy paint and gives surfaces a subtle luster, much like eggshells.

  • SATIN/PEARL

Satin and eggshell finishes share many similarities but are distinct from one another. Since it's a step up on the sheen scale, a satin finish has slightly more shine and durability than an eggshell sheen. Its sophisticated aesthetic makes it ideal for highlighting built-ins, archways, and trim.

  • SEMI-GLOSS

Semi-gloss is the standard go-to for kitchen cabinetry. It's a fantastic blend of elegance and durability that looks great on cabinetry and kitchen trim.

  • HIGH GLOSS

High gloss paint is the creme de la creme of illustrious finishes. It has an incredible shine and exceptional durability. Unfortunately, high gloss paint has no margin for error, so jobs using this sheen are best left to the professionals.
